Las Vegas, Nev. - The University of New Mexico women's soccer team fell just short of winning its second Mountain West Conference game of the season as the UNLV Rebels slipped past the Lobos with a 2-1 score Friday night in Las Vegas, Nev.
Sophomore Bridgette Sanchez put New Mexico on the boards in the first half with a goal at the 28th minute. The Rio Rancho, N.M. product looked alive as she knocked in a rebound after a shot hit the crossbar. The goal was Sanchez's second of the season. Sophomore defender Eryn Paetz collected the assist.
In the second half, UNLV's Annii Magliulo scored the equalizer at the 55th minute mark. The game looked like it could go into overtime until Magliulo returned for seconds and broke the tie at the 83rd minute. Erica Frizzell had the assist.
The Lobos return to soccer action on Sunday, October 17 when they face San Diego State at San Diego, Calif. Game time is set for 2 p.m.(MDT).
Quotes from UNM head coach Kit Vela (vs. UNLV): "I thought we played outstanding in the first half. UNLV is a good, experienced team. In all fairness, they outplayed us in the second half. They came back and showed their experience, but I'm proud of the way our young team played tonight. Our young players show what the future holds for us."
