SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The No. 66 New Mexico men's tennis team is one win away from its second consecutive regular season conference championship after its 5-2 win at Utah this afternoon. If the Lobos win tomorrow, they will be undefeated in the Mountain West and will have sole claim to the conference title. Last year, the Lobos shared the title with San Diego State and BYU.
Senior Divan Coetzee, ranked 27th nationally, won his 34th singles match of the season today, beating Roeland Brateanu 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Coetzee is now tied with Matt Amgwerd for the most wins in one season at UNM.
Coetzee is also 93-29 for his career at New Mexico. He needs three more wins to tie Pepe Caballero's record for career wins. Caballero went 96-56 from 1995-99.
Juniors David Kowalski and Ryan Stotland battled for three-set wins at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively. Kowalski downed Tomasz Grzyb 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 while Stotland fought back from a first set loss to win 4-6, 6-1, 7-6. Also winning in singles was senior Jasmin Hodzic, playing at No. 5. Hodzic netted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jason Yap.
The Lobos started the match by sweeping the doubles point, despite changing their usual seedings. Stotland and Kowalski edged past Brateanu and Miron Mann, 9-8 at No. 1. Hodzic and sophomore Henry Gers moved up to No. 2 doubles, getting an 8-6 win over Grzyb and Nick Coutts. At No. 3, freshman Robert Grzeskowiak made his first doubles appearance of the year, teamming with Coetzee for the 8-6 win over Yap and Ryan Scott.
The Lobos will conclude their regular season schedule tomorrow against BYU at 10 a.m.
