DENTON, Texas - The New Mexico softball team (8-6) held off the seventh inning rally by North Texas to defeat the tournament hosts 3-1 in the second game of the day at the North Texas/Betlin Round-Up.
The Lobos scored the first run of the game in the fifth inning when sophomore pinch runner Jamar Bynum scored from second base on an RBI single to right field by senior Ora Hensley. Bynum was running for junior Ashley Shartzer who singles to left to lead off the inning. Bynum advanced to second on senior Kim Korsak's sac bunt.
The Mean Green tried to rally in the seventh, scoring Brittiny Chapman with two outs off of Maureen Kelley's single to left center but that was all North Texas would get.
Sophomore Iraina Ogas earned the win, tossing 6.1 innings. Ogas allowed just two hits, one walk and no runs while striking out four. Senior Amy Dumas threw 0.2 innings of relief allowing one hit, one run and two walks while striking out one.
Suffering the loss was Mandy Hacker, pitching six innings. Hacker gave up five hits, three earned runs, two walks and struck out three.
The bats of Chavez and Hensley lifted the Lobos for the win. Chavez was 2-3 including her two-run home run. Hensley was 2-2 with one RBI.
The Lobos wrap up tournament play tomorrow when they take on Creighton at 10 a.m. and Oklahoma State at 3 p.m. CST.
