ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Redshirt freshman safety Jesse Paulsen had nine tackles, including two for loss, and two blocked field goals as the University of New Mexico offense and defense met as adversaries for the first time this fall Friday night at University Stadium. Paulsen and inside linebacker Tray Hardaway led the way for a strong defensive performance, as Hardaway finished with 10 tackles and the scrimmage's only interception.

The defense, a longtime staple of Lobo football, managed to keep the offense out of the end zone on the Lobos' first seven possessions, surrendering only three points off a 20-yard James Aho field goal. The sophomore missed on a 28-yard attempt to end the offense's first possession. While the defense did bend - the offense totaled 453 yards with 323 of that coming through the air - it didn't surrender a touchdown until the 110-play scrimmage moved to red-zone situational work with the offense getting the ball on the defense's 20-yard line.

The offense finally hit paydirt on its eighth possession when redshirt freshman quarterback B.R. Holbrook connected with sophomore fullback Chris Biren on an 11-yard touchdown pass in the right flat.

Moments later senior Roland Bruno notched the second touchdown of the evening on a spectacular diving 18-yard reception from senior Donovan Porterie. The catch came after Bruno shook sophomore cornerback Anthony Hooks on a square out, then went horizontal to reel in Porterie's offering. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Carmeiris Stewart hauled in a 19-yard TD pass from sophomore Brad Gruner and junior Andrew Banks scored on a 1-yard run off right tackle to cap the touchdowns. Redshirt freshman kicker Gordon Rowe added a 35-yard field goal to end the scoring.

The Lobos resume practice Saturday, August 15 at 3:30 p.m., and will scrimmage again next Saturday, August 22 at 5 p.m.
