ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico softball was swept by Texas State in a doubleheader Saturday at Lobo Field. The Lobos combined for 16 hits over the two games but the pitching woes continued against the Bobcats. Senior Samantha Hughes hit a grand slam in the first game to spark a late rally but it wasn't enough as UNM fell 9-8. The Lobos dropped game two 4-1 despite freshmen Jessica Garcia and Kerry Hodgins going 2-for-3.
Texas State (24-12) jumped ahead 3-0 in the top of the third inning on a bases loaded double. The Bobcats added another run in the fourth and five more runs in the fifth to reach the nine runs mark.
New Mexico (9-22) chipped away at the lead with two runs in the fourth. UNM was on the verge of getting run-ruled down 9-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth but would plate a run to remain in the game. Hughes and the Lobos erupted for five runs in the bottom of the seventh but the rally wasn't enough. Hughes hit a grand slam in the inning over the right center field fence.
Lobo freshman Danielle Castro (2-10) started both games and took the losses. Castro pitched 4 1/3 innings in game one allowing eight runs on 10 hits. Hodgins came on in relief and pitched the final 2 2/3 innings of the first game.
The Bobcats wouldn't let up in game two. Texas State scored two runs in the first inning and never let up the lead. UNM cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the second but that would be the end of the offense for New Mexico.
Texas State pulled away with a two-run fifth inning and cruised to the victory.
Hodgins was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Garcia went 2-for-3 with a run.
Castro pitched four innings allowing four runs on four hits. Senior Analise Rubalcava threw three scoreless innings and only allowed a hit.
New Mexico and Texas State will finish the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. MT. Gametracker and video will be available on www.GoLobos.com.
