COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico seniors Lee Emanuel and Ashley Gibson have been selected as the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, respectively. Emanuel earned his second Athlete of the Week award this season, increasing his program records to four career indoor awards and seven total (indoor/outdoor) weekly awards. Gibson, meanwhile, is the first Lobo woman since 2002 to earn the MWC honor during the indoor season. She is the first to be honored for her performance in a running event indoors.
Emanuel (Hastings, England) placed fourth overall in the men's invitational 3,000-meter run at the Husky Classic held in Seattle on Feb. 13. His NCAA automatic-qualifying time of 7:51.20 ties the MWC all-time record and ranks fourth in the nation this season (TFRRS.org). Emanuel shaved more than five seconds off his previous-best time and reclaimed his school record with the performance. He was one of 27 competitors in the 3K field that ran under the NCAA provisional qualifying standard and was one of nine to automatically qualify for the NCAAs in the event.
He has already punched his NCAA ticket in the mile, where he owns the fastest time in the country this season.
Gibson also broke her own school record after clocking the league's fastest mile time of the season at the Husky Classic. The Newcastle, England, product finished 10th in the invitational section with an NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 4:43.78, slicing eight-tenths of a second off her previous best in the event. Gibson's time leads the Conference by more than five seconds and is the 23rd-fastest in the nation to date (TFRRS.org).
