The University of New Mexico women's swimming and diving team fell to in-state rival New Mexico State University, 159-140, today at the West Mesa Pool. The Lobos are now 12-3 in dual competition against NMSU since the 1990-91 season. The Aggies broke a six-meet Lobo winning streak.

"It definitely wasn't our best meet of the year," said Lobo head coach Tracy Ljone. "We swam better last weekend, but we had some solid swims today. Katrina McLoughlin, Jennifer Patterson, Ashley Grisdale had some really good swims. It's not discouraging, we just had a lot of weekends in a row, and now we have three weeks off before conference. Definitely give some credit to Rick (Pratt) at NMSU. He is doing a great job down there and they had a fantastic meet."

Senior diver Carrie Quinn captured two of UNM's seven first-place finishes. She won the 1-meter and 3-meter dives, scoring 267.45 and 314.70, respectively. Sophomore Ashley Grisdale did her part, placing first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.70), the 400-yard IM (4:33.78), and 100-yard butterfly with a season- and team-best time of 57.85. Junior Katrina McLoughlin picked up one individual first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.67. McLoughlin also helped the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Sally Bellinger, Theresa Rogers, and Tori Clarridge, finish first (1:37.33).

"It's an exciting time of the season and we get to have some fun," said Ljone. "The girls are excited and will be ready for the Mountain West Conference meet."

New Mexico State University won 1.5 points for the school in the Route 66 Hotel and Casino Rio Grande Rivalry Series. The University of New Mexico holds the lead, 7.5-6.

Up Next: The divers will be heading to the Air Force Diving Invitational on Feb. 1-2 in Colorado Springs. The next event for the full team is the 2008 Mountain West Conference Swimming & Diving Championships, Feb. 27-March 1, in Oklahoma City, Okla.
