Opening Statement from Coach Alford
Well I am really pleased with the effort tonight. These guys did a really good job with effort and I thought we got it again tonight. They were really focused, we moved the ball well again tonight, and with 24 assists in the game and that is a lopsided score. You got to really be pleased, four or five guys in double figures; we shared the ball; defensively we had a few breakdowns that we got a long way to go, and our pick n roll defense we continue to work on. Overall, I'm very pleased with this.
Question: After coming off an emotional week from last game and it being the new year, how did you think the boys played?
"And that's what we've talked about. We talked about with the team; that the last team to beat us got beat by them, and we talked about responding, you have to respond and get better. There were some areas that got better tonight and there were some areas that we might have taken a step back on, and we are going to give the guys a day off tomorrow. They need a day off. They haven't had a day off in a long time. They need to get away from basketball, and then we will meet back on Thursday and do a lot of film and just do some teaching here Thursday and Friday because we have an early game on Saturday."
Question: Do you have any early diagnosis on Hugh (Greenwood)?
"I hope it's not bad, we haven't got any xrays or anything, but it is a little bit of a high ankle sprain which has bothered him this past summer. It's the same foot so we hope there are no lingering issues there. He will obviously get a lot of treatment within the next 72 hours. "
Question: Demetrius, you can't really say enough about that guy..
"Well he is starting to do more defensively, and if he will do that his minutes will go up. He has been tremendous off our bench and there are not a lot of guys that come off the bench and get eight assists. He really concentrated more on the defensive end. Him and Philip give us a really potent bench, Jamal has been scoring well for us and I was really pleased with our bench."
Question: I really think Drew (Gordon) has been expanding his reach in the post doing a lot of different things.
"I just think he is comfortable and the guys are doing a good job of getting him the ball at the right time and he has worked harder to post lower to get a little bit closer to the basket. And when he is given the ball he is making 15 foot jump shot as well. When he stays out of foul trouble , he gets a double-double in 27 minutes again, and I thought AJ (Hardeman) ran well today and gave a lot of momentum."
Question: Are you comfortable with the way the teams been playing leading up to conference?
"Well we have won 11 games in a row so I'm as comfortable as I can be, but you can never be completely comfortable. We have been consistent holding teams under 40% shooting and holding teams under 65 points. Offensively, we have shot better and three out of four games we have shot double-figure threes. Our game is getting more balanced and we have been doing a good job of finding each other, and spacing is getting better and our inside-out game, and our transition game got going tonight. Then again we are learning to play different styles. St Louis made us play a certain style and this team was a different style. I think what we are excited about having another 40 minutes, and we have five or six practices before Wyoming that we can do a lot of teaching and shape up a lot things before we start league play."
