ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico senior Amy Ray went 3-for-4 Sunday to highlight the Lobos, 6-4, victory over San Diego State at Lobo Field. UNM rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to seal the win and improve to 12-14 overall and 2-1 in the Mountain West Conference. The Aztecs fall to 25-18 this year and 2-6 in conference.

UNM opened the game with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomores Samantha Hughes and Analise Rubalcava reached to lead off the game and both came around to score. Freshman Katie Gilmore had an RBI single in the inning.

SDSU answered with a run in the second and two more in the third to take a 3-2 lead. Janae Portugal scored the only run in the second inning on a single by Christine Kulick. Brittany Knudsen led off the third with a triple to right field and scored on a Tamani Wells single. Wells eventually came home on a bunt single by Monica Alnes.

UNM senior Becky Dover came through with a game-tying clutch double to right center field to score pinch runner Jennifer Deitrich, who was running for junior Lindsey Elcess.

Both pitchers settled in after three innings and the game would remain tied at 3-3 until the bottom of the sixth. The Lobos picked three runs on four hits and took control of the game. Sophomore Marsha Taylor led off the inning with pinch hit double to start the rally. Taylor scored the go ahead run on a Rubalcava single to center. Ray followed with a triple to right field to score Rubalcava and add an insurance run. The final run for UNM was scored by Ray on a Gilmore single to center.

SDSU plated a run in the top of the seventh but good defense by the Lobos halted the late rally.

Junior Kelly Ninemire gets the win for UNM and goes to 7-8. Ninemire pitched a complete game allowing four runs on 11 hits. Christina Ross takes the loss for SDSU and falls to 17-9 this year.

Gilmore and Ray were the only Lobos with multiple hits in the game and combined for five of the 10 hits. Gilmore was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Ray collected three hits, scored a run and had an RBI.

UNM goes 2-1 in the opening weekend of MWC play and return to action on April 19 at Utah in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. For more information about UNM softball visit www.GoLobos.com.
