ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico men's tennis team wrapped up the first day of pre-qualifying play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships, hosted by the University of Tulsa. Newcomer Phil Anderson defeated Jorge Delgado of the University of Texas-San Antonio with a 5-7, 6-0, 7-6 victory.
Sophomore Joe Wood lost to Texas A&M's Kayvon Karimi, and freshman Carl Ho was also defeated by Jordi Ballester of Jacksonville, 6-2, 6-1. The pre-qualifying singles include as many as 256 players.
Players competing in pre-qualifying singles must advance four rounds to make one of 16 slots that move on to the subsequent qualifying draw of 128. Lobo seniors Johnny Parkes and Graeme Kassautzki were pre-selected for the qualifying round, which begins on Monday, Oct. 6. The final 16 of the singles qualifying draw advance to play in the concluding 64-man draw starting on Thursday, Oct. 9.
Miles Bugby received a bye and will face-off with Iowa's Reinoud Haal tomorrow, while Anderson will go on to play Sacramento State's Kiryl Harbatsuik.
There is no pre-qualifying play for doubles. Qualifying action begins on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Representing New Mexico will be the duo of Johnny Parkes and Miles Bugby. Teams must advance three rounds in doubles qualifying to enter the main draw.
