ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The New Mexico volleyball team lost in three games (30-21, 30-27, 30-17) to Kentucky Friday night (Sept. 19) in the Albuquerque Marriott Lobo Tournament at Johnson Arena. UNM falls to 3-7 for the season, while UK improves to 8-2.
Kentucky limited the Lobos to a .031 attack percentage and outblocked UNM, 10-6. New Mexico could only muster 26 kills against the Wildcats. Chelsea Sondrup (So., Lindon, Utah) led UNM with six kills while Anna Reines (Sr., Big Lake, Minn.) and Kelly Therkelsen (Fr., Eagan, Minn.) each tallied five. Lindsay Smith (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif.) paced the Lobo offense with 19 assists and Monica Meihack led the defense with 10 digs.
"We're continuing to improve in our passing game," said UNM head coach Kelley Sliva McKee, "but we struggled to put the ball down, which makes it hard to score against a team like Kentucky. We're improving with each match, and we're looking forward to playing twice tomorrow."
Three Wildcasts posted double-digits in kills, including Sissy Canfield, who led UK with 13 while hitting .500 (13K-1E-24A). Setter Leigh Marcum dished out 34 assists and collected eight digs. Julie Davis had five blocks for the Wildcats.
Ohio defeated Sacramento State in five games (30-22, 26-30, 30-23, 29-31, 15-9) in the first match of the tournament.
The Lobos return to action tomorrow (Sept. 20) to face Ohio at 12:30 p.m. and Sacramento State at 7:30 p.m.
