Albuquerque, N.M. --- Folks in Lobo athletics know this to be true, but now the nation knows as well ... never doubt the power of Lobo fans, and social media. Drew Gordon's monster rebound jam against San Diego State was voted the 2010-11 Dunk of the Year by the website Ballin' is a Habit, garnering 59 percent of the vote. Gordon's dunk was also voted the best Tip-Dunk of the Year, and Phillip McDonald's dunk vs. Wyoming in transition was voted Co-Two-Footed Dunk of the Year along with Memphis' D.J. Stephens, who threw his down against Georgetown.

Gordon was nominated in two categories, for best tip-dunk, and for the best dunk of the year. Gordon easily won the tip-dunk category picking up nearly 89% of the vote. It was the overall dunk category that was in doubt, until Lobo Nation had their voices heard. While the UNM website posted the links to vote for the dunks, it was through UNM's twitter and facebook pages that the voting went viral, as the links were tweeted and retweeted over the last few days. Gordon was trailing 44% to 42% just two days ago to UNC Asheville's John Williams.

However, Gordon up with 59% of the over 1,500 votes in the category. Gordon's dunk was a monster, coming against San Diego State in The Pit. On the play, which occurred early in the second half, Alex Kirk misses a short baseline jumper, and Gordon races over from the free throw line uncontested and grabs the rebound with his right hand after it bounded almost beyond the backboard, and he hammered it home, much to the delight of the 15,411 in attendance, including CBS College Sports announcer Steve Lappas. ESPN's description of the dunk on their YouTube channel refers to it as "a sick dunk".

I appreciate all of the love and support from everyone that voted for me for dunk of the year," said Gordon. "The only reason I won is because of y'all! GO LOBOS!!"

McDonald and Stephens deadlocked at 34% each, despite nearly 7,000 votes in the category being cast. McDonald's dunk gave the Lobos the lead against Wyoming late in the first half, and it came on a 3-on-1 break after a pass from Dairese Gary, but it was the way he dunked it that put him in the running for the top two-footed dunk. Gary hit Phillip with a perfect bounce pass and dunked right over a Wyoming defender, to the point where Mtn. analyst Blaine Fowler stated "You don't want to be the guy in yellow, the guy that shows up in the picture, in the newspaper, getting dunked on. Boy, he just got dunked on, right no top of his head. That was a nasty dunk."

That dunk was one of 16 he had during the season, second only to Gordon. McDonald's dunk was the number one play on SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays. All of the dunks can be found at www.ballinisahabit.net
