ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico women's soccer defeated St. Mary's, 3-1, Friday in the nightcap of the UNM Classic held at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos outshot the Gaels, 15-8, and had three different players score. UNM improved to 6-4-0 overall and has won three of its last four matches.
"We made a lot of changes early and had a lot of players play well," said UNM head coach Kit Vela. "St. Mary's has some really strong players but we had the determination to win. The girls believed in the game plan and stuck with it. I've very pleased with the outcome and look forward to Sunday."
There was some early excitement in the first three minutes of the match. Both teams managed to score almost on consecutive plays. UNM found the net first, scoring in the second minute. Senior Alanna Abeyta scored her second goal of the season on a header from Krista Peterson.
SMC responded with a goal by Nikki Schrey. Schrey scored on a one timer off a cross from McKenna Belzer. The goal was Schrey's third of the year and the only one for SMC in the match.
UNM senior Bridgette Sanchez scored the game-winner in the 30th minute. Sanchez scored from 35 yards out on a ball that was out of reach of SMC goalkeeper Tara Larson. The goal was the last in the half for UNM and the match was 2-1 at the break.
The Lobos added their final goal in the 82nd minute. Sophomore Hannah Hand scored on a long ball played into the box by Amber Wetsch. Hand slid into position from the right side and found the net. The goal was her first of the season and the first in her career.
Sophomore Shannon Adragna started her 10th consecutive match in net for the Lobos. Adragna had one save in 90 minutes, allowing a goal while facing eight shots.
