ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.---The University of New Mexico women's soccer team defeated San Diego State 2-1 in conference action Saturday night at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos improved to 8-1-3 on the season, and are now 2-0-0 in Mountain West Conference action.
Lobo midfielder Zaneta Wyne gave New Mexico an early lead in the second half as she shot past the Aztec keeper and scored from two yards out in the 54th minute of action. San Diego state quickly responded with a goal from Marisa Fraticelli, who headed the ball into the back of the net after an Aztec corner kick.
Securing the win for New Mexico was junior Jordan Craig, who beat out several Aztec defenders in the box and scored with a shot over the SDSU keepers head. It was Craig's third goal of the season and fifth of her career.
New Mexico and San Diego State were evenly matched throughout the game with both keepers recording four saves. The Lobos took 15 shots compared to 13 from SDSU.
The goal by San Diego State was the first goal allowed by the Lobo defense in four games and was only the fourth goal to be scored against New Mexico this season. UNM is undefeated at home this season with a 4-0 record at the UNM Soccer Complex.
The Lobos return to action on Thursday, Oct. 14 when they host Utah for Think Pink at 6 p.m. New Mexico will be collecting new and gently used coats for kids, bring a coat to the game and receive a ticket for $2.
