ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- A three-run third inning, highlighted by Matt Hibbitts two-run single, led the Cherry squad to a 4-3 victory in Game One of the 2007 Cherry and Silver Lobo Fall Series, Thursday afternoon at Lobo Field. Hibbitts' single scored Brett Fanning and Dane Hamilton after Austin Buck had scored earlier in the inning on a Brian Cavazos-Galvez infield single. The Cherry squad's big inning began with two outs and the bases empty, when Buck singled to left, followed by singles from Fanning and Hamilton.
The Cherry squad added a run in the fourth when Buck singled home Scott Gracey, who had led off the inning with a base hit. Cherry starter Jacob Norton picked up the win going five innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Joey Evans picked up the save allowing no runs and two hits in the final two innings. Gracey and Buck led the Cherry team at the plate with two hits apiece in four plate appearances.
First baseman Kevin Atkinson led the Silver squad offensively with two hits in three at-bats, while scoring two runs. Atkinson ended the top of the seventh with a deep fly ball to left, with two runners aboard. Anthony Martinez, Cherry squad left fielder, made a good catch of the Atkinson drive at the top of the wall to end the game.
Brandon Hewett took the loss for the Silver, going five and a third innings with eight hits and four earned runs. Hewett was relieved by Drew Kendrick, who did not allow a run over one and two-thirds innings.
"It was a great game," said Lobo head coach Ray Birmingham. "Well played. A bright sunny day with a good crowd at Lobo Field. The crowd had fun and the players played hard. What more can you ask for? Lobo baseball is on the rise."
The series continues on Friday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. at Lobo Field.
