SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - New Mexico softball seniors Samantha Hughes and Analise Rubalcava led the way for the Lobos as UNM defeated Utah 5-2 Saturday in the regular-season finale. Hughes and Rubalcava combined to go 3-for-5 against the Utes with four RBIs and two runs scored. Hughes had her team-leading eighth homer in the first inning. UNM improved to 13-35 overall and 4-11 in the Mountain West Conference. Utah fell to 22-31 and 4-10 in conference play.
UNM opened the regular-season finale in exciting fashion with a two-run homer by Hughes in the first inning that allowed Rubalcava to score after she singled.
Lobo Freshman Danielle Castro cruised to the fifth inning only allowing a hit for the Utes. Castro looked to be mowing her away through the Utah lineup but she got into trouble in the home half of the fifth inning.
Castro walked Utah slugger Kara Foster to leadoff the inning and two batters later gave up a two-run homer to Jacey Jensen. Jensen launched a shot over the center field fence and tied the game at 2-2.
New Mexico tried to rally in the sixth inning after loading the bases. Rubalcava walked to lead off the inning and quickly advanced to third on a double by Hughes. Junior Katie Gilmore walked with one out to load the bases. UNM hit into a double play and ended the inning. The Lobos stranded two runners on-base and left the game tied at two.
Freshman Kerry Hodgins came on in relief in the bottom of the sixth inning. Hodgins got two quick outs before giving up a double. With a runner a second, UNM got out of the inning on a plate at the plate. Gilmore threw out the runner trying to take home on an infield single and the tag was applied by Lobo catcher Jessica Garcia.
Garcia doubled to start the top of the seventh and UNM had a runner in scoring position with no out. Freshman Shenise Cox came in to pinch run for Garcia and advance to third on a single through the right side by sophomore Tianna George. Freshman Jessica Lujan-Dresslar pinch ran for George and quickly stole second base. After a strikeout, junior Cristin Anderson was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
UNM would snap the 2-2 tie after Rubalcava and Hughes came through with back-to-back walks scoring two runs. Junior Shaunte Duarte scored a run on a ground out and the Lobos took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
Hodgins closed out the game and pickup her fourth win of the season. Hodgins closes out the 2009 season with a 4-2 overall record. Hodgins pitched two innings allowing two hits and no runs. Castro got the no decision in her final appearance.
Ashley Smuda got the loss for Utah after facing seven batters. She gave up two runs on one hit and walked two.
New Mexico had seven hits in the game including two by Hughes.
The Lobos are officially done with the season and will take a couple of weeks off before training beings.
