FORT WORTH, Texas - New Mexico's Bobby LaFromboise held the University of Utah to two runs over 8.1 innings of action en route to leading second-seeded University of New Mexico to an 8-2 victory on Wednesday at the 2008 Phillips 66 MWC Baseball Championship at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Lobos jumped out on Utah starter Stephen Fife right from the get-go as UNM scored a trio of runs in the bottom half of the first inning, which was highlighted by an RBI double by Kevin Atkinson. In that frame, Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Rafael Neda also drove in runs for the Lobos. UNM came back to score three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a pair of hits and one Utah error to take a 6-1 lead. The Lobos added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after Mike Brownstein connected on a RBI triple then was plated one hitter later on a Utah throwing error.
With an 8-1 lead, LaFromboise cruised on the mound to his sixth victory of the season as he hurled 8.1 innings of action allowing 11 hits - but only allowing two Utes to score. The UNM starter struck out three hitters while surrendering a trio of walks.
Offensively, Brownstein led the Lobos with three hits to go along with three runs scored and one RBI, while Cavazos-Galvez collected two hits, two runs scored and two RBI, and Scott Gracey collected two hits and two runs scored for UNM.
Michael Beltran led Utah with a 3-for-4 performance while Cody Guymon collected two hits and drove in one run.
With the victory, the University of New Mexico improved to 33-23 on the season while Utah dropped to 24-27 overall. The Lobos will face the winner of top-seeded TCU and No. 6 UNLV Thursday at 6 p.m. (MDT).
