TUCSON, Ariz. --- New Mexico softball was swept in doubleheader by the 5th-ranked Arizona Wildcats Saturday inside Rita Hillenbrand Stadium. The Wildcats run-ruled the Lobos both games in five innings. UA took game one, 13-0, and beat UNM, 8-0, in the nightcap. The Lobos fall to 7-12 on the year and Arizona moves to 23-7.
In game one, Arizona hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first and scored 10 runs in the fourth to run-rule the Lobos, 13-0, in five innings. The Wildcats hit two home runs in the game, while scoring 13 runs on 10 hits. Junior pitcher Taryne Mowatt threw a one-hitter for UA and moved to 16-6 on the year.
Sophomore Analise Rubalcava had the only hit for New Mexico in the top of the first inning. Rubalcava went 1-for-2 against the Wildcats with a single to right field. UNM starter Kelly Ninemire took the loss after giving up eight runs on seven hits. Ninemire fell to 4-6 on the year. Senior Caley Peterson and freshman Tori Rogers both pitched in the game.
The Wildcats completed the sweep of the doubleheader with an 8-0 victory. UA scored its first two runs in the opening inning on a UNM throwing error and a stolen base by Kristie Fox.
UA rallied for six runs in the third inning on four hit, including three home runs. Chelsie Mesa and Fox hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the inning. Sophomore Sam Banister came up with the bases loaded and hit a grand slam to left center field to put the Wildcats up 8-0 after four innings.
The Lobos had three hits in the game, including singles by Junior Lindsey Elcess, sophomore Samantha Hughes and freshman Katie Gilmore. Ninemire (4-7) got the loss and Rogers came on in relief to pitch the fourth inning.
