SOUTH BEND, Ind. - University of New Mexico junior Derek Mackel was unable to improve his NCAA qualifying position as he missed on all three attempts in the pole vault yesterday at the Alex Wilson Invitational last chance meet. Despite Saturday's disappointment, Mackel still has a good chance to join teammate Matt Gonzales in Arkansas for the 2005 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

On Friday, Gonzales won the 5,000 meters to become the first Lobo man since 1993 to qualify for the indoor championships. He is currently ranked No. 8 in the country in the 5K, while Mackel slipped three spots to a tie for 18th in the national pole vault rankings. The final list of national qualifiers is expected to be released on Monday.

In other events on the final day of the Alex Wilson Invite, senior Amanda Barnes closed her indoor career with a third place finish in the shot put, recording a mark of 48-11.00. Fellow senior Cameron Clarke placed 18th in the 800, running a time of 1:54.73 in his final indoor race. Clarke is slated to redshirt the outdoor season, however, and will be back in 2006.
