The University of New Mexico Ski Team raced to a third place showing on day one of the Denver Invitational Friday. Sophomore Lars Loeseth won his first Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association race by taking home the men's giant slalom title. The Lobo women continued their strong season by winning the Nordic 5K Freestyle team race.

Loeseth, an All-American in 2004, set a new career-high with his win in the giant slalom. He was joined in the top-10 by fellow sophomores Alex Mach and Peter Roering. They finished sixth and 10th, respectively.

The women's Nordic team welcomed back two-time All-American Martina Stursova who had been training with the Czech National Team . She skied to a second place finish in her first collegiate action of the season. Also in the top-10 for the Nordic women were junior Trine Lundamo (4th) and senior Pirkko Pulkkanen (9th).

The only other Lobo to finish in the top-10 was junior Alpine skier Gladys Weidt. Weidt tied her collegiate career-high with a seventh place showing in the women's giant slalom. It was also her best finish of the season.

UNM tallied 256 points on the day, trailing only Denver (270) and Utah (279) with one day of competition left. Saturday teams will compete in slalom and classic races.
