Lobo Chris Barnicle ran a time of 29.40.45 in the 10,000-meters Thursday at the NCAA West Preliminaries in Austin, Texas. The UNM senior advances to the NCAA finals in Eugene, Ore.

Only the top 12 out of 48 competitors in each regional event will advance to the NCAA finals. There also is an NCAA East Region. Barnicle took 8th in the event. The University of New Mexico Track and Field team also advanced six additional competitors to the quarterfinals in their respective events.

New Mexico had all three competitors in the 1500-meters qualify for the quarterfinals set for 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Those who advance past the quarterfinals earn a spot in the NCAA semifinals in Eugene. Standout Lee Emanuel came in second with a time of 3:43.31, less than a second behind A.J. Acosta (3:42.76) from Oregon. Senior David Bishop ran a time of 3:44.21 and sophomore Ross Millington finished with a time of 3:50.58 for a ticket to Saturday's quarterfinals.

Senior Ashley Gibson lives to compete another day in the 1500-meters with a qualifying time of 4:26.14. Gibson will run at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday in the quarterfinals looking to advance to the national semifinals in Eugene.

Lamaar Thomas advanced to the quarterfinals in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.42. Thomas will compete in the quarterfinals at 5:00 p.m. Friday.

Freshman Sam Evans ran a time of 1:49.52 in the 800-meter preliminaries to qualify for the quarterfinals Friday at 5:30 p.m. Evans is one of four freshmen out of a total of 24 competitors to advance to the quarterfinals.

The Lobos are back in action Friday beginning at 11 a.m. with the discus.
