SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Lobos lost their first Mountain West Conference game of the season to San Diego State, 7-4.
New Mexico got things started as the Lobos scored the first run of the game in top of the third inning. Second baseman Kyle Stiner smoked an RBI single up the middle to score right fielder Ben Woodchick, giving the Lobos the early 1-0 lead.
The Aztecs answered right back with a rally of their own in the bottom of the third. With two on and one out, second baseman Tim Zier tied the game at one all after putting down a bunt for a single, scoring Cody Slader from third. San Diego State added another run as center fielder Pat Colwell scored off a balk from Lobos' starting pitcher Gera Sanchez, giving the Aztecs the lead, 2-1.
After giving up the lead, the young Lobos showed some grit as they put up another two runs in the top of the fourth on Aztecs' starting pitcher Ethan Miller. Designated hitter Jacob Nelson got things started with an RBI double to left field. Third baseman Quay Grant followed with a single to left field that scored Nelson from second, giving the Lobos the lead, 3-2.
In the first at-bat of the bottom of the fourth, SDSU's left fielder Chris Wilson sent a solo home run into the left field stands, tying the game at three all.
Things got choppy for the Lobos in the bottom of the fifth as the Aztecs finally got to starter Gera Sanchez. Zier started things off in the inning by picking up his second RBI on the night with a single to left. Right fielder Cody Smith followed with a triple down the right field line that scored Zier. After Smith's triple, Gera Sanchez was taken out in favor of freshman right-hander Alexis Garza. Garza struggled giving up an RBI single to the Aztecs' DH Brandon Meredith. Meredith's teammate Jomel Torres brought in the fourth and final run of the inning with a double down the right field line, putting the Aztecs up, 7-3.
The Lobos' Sanchez finished the game with 4 1/3 innings pitched, surrendering five earned runs with no walks and eight strikeouts.
The Lobos were able to put up one more run in the sixth as Nelson picked up his second RBI on the night with a sacrifice fly to center, bringing in catcher Mitchell Garver. Nelson's RBI narrowed the Aztecs lead to 7-4. On the night, Nelson went 2-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.
Unfortunately, the Lobos never picked up another run after the sixth inning, losing the game by a score of 7-4. Alexis Garza (1-3) picked up the loss for the Lobos, while Miller picked up the win (2-2) for the Aztecs.
The Lobos fall to 3-14 on the season, 0-1 in the Mountain West Conference, while SDSU improves to 4-14, 1-0 in the MWC.
Saturday's game between the Lobos and Aztecs will take place at 2 p.m. MT. The game was originally scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. MT, but was rescheduled to avoid anticipated inclement weather.
