FORT COLLINS, Colo. --- The University of New Mexico volleyball team lost a tough road match at Colorado State, 30-27, 30-25, 30-19 to open Mountain West competition.

"Games One and Two were very competitive, but I was disappointed because we made some mental errors at times in those games that cost us ever getting over the top," said Lobos head coach Jeff Nelson. "That was our challenge at halftime, to make better efforts and pursue harder."

The Lobos (9-3, 0-1 MWC) were competitive with the Rams (7-3, 2-0 MWC) in the first two games, closing the gap on big leads late in each game. Both teams kept the crowd at Moby Arena on the edge of their seats with many long rallies throughout the match.

"As long as those rallies are and as tiresome as they can get, fighting through it and putting that extra effort in when it has been that long of a rally, winning it and knowing you put that effort in, makes it so much better," said UNM junior outside hitter Jeanne Fairchild.

The Rams built an eight-point lead, 25-17, in Game One. With the score 29-23, freshman defensive specialist Kelsi Phillips held serve as the Lobos cut the CSU lead to 29-27, with a big kill by Lisa Meeter and a block by Allie Suiter, both from Colorado. Fairchild had eight of her team-high 15 kills in Game One to keep UNM in the hunt.

Colorado State built a quick seven-point lead, 11-4, to begin Game Two. The Lobos battled back with kills by Fairchild keeping UNM within one at 23-22 and 24-23. Freshman Taylor Hadfield also had a kill late to keep it within one, 25-24. But CSU had some big kills to build back the lead and the win.

In Game Three, the Rams took a double-digit lead for the first time of the match, 16-5, and kept the Lobos at arms length to win the match.

In addition to 15 kills from Fairchild, Meeter recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 12 kills and 10 digs.

The Lobos return to action on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. against Air Force. It is Lobo League and Military Appreciation Night at the Johnson Center.
