ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico women's soccer team defeated the UNLV Rebels 2-0 on senior night at the UNM Soccer Complex. Junior Rachel Fields scored the game-winner in the 50th minute to put the Lobos on top for good. Head coach Kit Vela picked up her 12th win of the season, which ties the most wins in a season in her tenure. The Lobos improve to 12-3-4 on the season and 4-3-0 in MWC play. The Rebels fall to 5-9-5 on the season and 1-5-1 in MWC play.
"Every conference win is a big win," said Vela. "UNLV is a very good team we were just fortunate to put away our opportunities in the second half. We were able to find a little more energy and everyone did well coming off the bench."
The Lobos finish regular season play in fourth place in the Mountain West Conference and have earned the fourth seed in the MWC Tournament hosted by BYU, on Nov. 3-7. The Lobos face a rematch with fifth seed Wyoming at 3 p.m. MT on Nov. 3 in Provo, Utah.
"I think it will be another great game. I think the girls are looking forward to it. It's going to be a battle either way. It doesn't matter who you play in the conference tournament, it's going to be a battle. I think we are just excited to finish off with a win here and get out to Provo and do our job there."
A beautifully developed play led to the Fields header and the Lobos first score of the match. Sophomore Jael Fanning threw the ball in to fellow sophomore Zaneta Wyne. Wyne teed the ball up for Fanning who crossed the ball into the box and right on to the head of Fields. Fields caught UNLV keeper Alicia Lugo off her line and put the ball far post for the goal. Fields netted her third goal of these season and fourth of her career. The goal was Fields' second game-winner of the season and her career.
Just over 8:02 later, Zaneta Wyne blasted a ball just inside the 18-yard box that found the back of the net. Fanning picked up her second assist of the night on the goal. Wyne netted her fourth goal of the season and the eight of her career. Fanning dished out her fifth and sixth assists of the season and is tied for sixth-place all time for assists in a season.
The Lobo defense held tough the entire match and only allowed 12 shots.
Lobo goalkeeper Kelli Cornell picked up her 12th win of the season and added to her single season school record of shutouts in a season with her 12th.
Four Lobos played their last matches at the UNM Soccer Complex tonight. Seniors Jess Quador, Veronika Strnadova and juniors Megan Bodenhemier and Katie McKernan donned the Cherry and Silver for the last time at home.
The Lobos will head to Provo, Utah for the MWC Tournament this Nov. 3-7. The Lobos will face fifth-seeded Wyoming in the quarterfinal round at 3 p.m. MT on Nov. 3. For more information visit www.GoLobos.com.
