ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - University of New Mexico senior running back Kasey Carrier on Monday was named to the Maxwell Award watch list for the 2013 college football season, the Maxwell Football Club announced Monday.
The Maxwell Award annually goes to the America's best college football player. The award began in 1937.
The list includes 76 players from across the country, including 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel, quarterback at Texas A&M, 2012 Ted Hendricks Award Winner Jadeveon Clowney, defensive end at South Carolina, 2012 Fred Biletnikoff Award winner Marqise Lee and quarterback A.J. McCarron of national championship Alabama also are on the list.
Carrier established a University of New Mexico school record with 1,469 rushing yards in 2012, including a school and Mountain West record 338-yard performance against Air Force. He earned second-team All-MW honors as the Lobos went 4-9 last season, winning one more game than the three previous seasons combined.
Carrier is ninth on UNM's all-time rushing list with 2,111 yards.
UNM will open the 2013 season on Aug. 31 against Texas-San Antonio on Branch Field at University Stadium.
