New Mexico Head Coach Steve Alford
Against Weber State
"I'll tell you what, today was all about the players. They did a tremendous job. You play at this level, hold a team to 23 percent shooting, tied a Pit record for fewest points allowed, in this era of basketball, that's doing something. I couldn't be more pleased. We know we've got a long way to go defensively, but this was a spectacular defensive performance. We did a lot of good things defensively, and still shot 50 percent from the floor and only turned the ball over nine times. I told the guys in the locker room 'when it is a defensive battle like that it doesn't always make it the prettiest, but a 30-point win when you guard like that is a lot of fun.'"
About post play
"The last couple of games we have really guarded the post very well and we've done a very good job with our ball pressure. We forced 16 turnovers and four assists. Hey 16 turnovers and four assists, we'll take that ratio any time. All 10 of our guys played with nine having a positive assist-turnover ratio. I thought the way J.R. (Giddens) got us going early in the game, I thought that was a huge key for us."
Passing the test
"We challenged them on our toughness test. They obviously passed that. They are doing a really good job of focusing. The last two days of practice they've really concentrated and focused on our scouting reports. They followed it to a 'T'. You appreciate efforts like that. When you do those things you set yourself up for some success and to have 11 wins before Christmas really is incredible. I couldn't be more pleased."
Upcoming road games
"We have two really big road opportunities. We are down to 80 minutes to get better before we start league play and both of those are away from home. So we'd like to go into conference play with more than one road win. That road win was in early November so it's been awhile since that happened. When you have to play two of your first three away from here, you better have some confidence that you can go on the road and win."
