DENTON, Texas - The New Mexico softball team (6-6) fell 2-1 in eight innings to Texas-Arlington in the second game of the North Texas/Betlin Round-Up at Denia Park.
The Mavericks started the eighth with Falon Kwasnick on second base when Amanda Haney successfully laid down the sac bunt to move Kwasnick to third. Jenna Fortune gave UTA the 2-1 lead on her game-winning single that scored Kwasnick.
New Mexico started the bottom of the eighth with sophomore Jamar Bynum on second base and sophomore Stephanie Kennedy at the plate. Kennedy advanced Bynum to third with her sac bunt. That was as far as Bynum would move with freshmen Ryanne Hodgins and Robyn Hutson failing to bring her home.
Texas-Arlington got the scoring started with their first run coming in the third inning. April Jones doubled to left field with one out and then scored as Fortune reached on an error by junior shortstop Kelli Edelbrock.
New Mexico fired right back, scoring their only run of the game in the bottom of the third. Bynum led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on Kennedy's sac bunt. Hodgins singled to move Bynum to third. Two batters later, junior Cassie Chavez singled to score Bynum.
Senior Amy Dumas suffered the tough loss, pitching eight innings. Dumas struck out eight, walked two, allowed five hits and two runs but neither runs were earned. Chavez led the Lobos going 1-2 with one RBI. Hutson added one triple.
Getting the win was Jill Garro, tossing eight innings, striking out six, giving up four hits, one walk and one earned run.
The Lobos continue tournament play tomorrow, taking on Wichita State at 3 p.m. and North Texas at 5:30 p.m. CST.
