ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico women's soccer travels to Flagstaff, Ariz., Sunday to battle Northern Arizona in the final non-conference match of the season. The Lobos have won two of their last three matches including Tuesday night's 1-0 victory over Arizona State. UNM is 5-2-2 overall this season, while NAU enters the match with a 4-1-3 mark. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. MT.
Lobos Blank Arizona State, 1-0: New Mexico freshman Alexis Ball scored the game-winner midway through the opening period Tuesday night to lift UNM past Arizona State, 1-0 at the UNM Soccer Complex. Ball scored her third goal in three games and helped the Lobos improve to 5-2-2 overall. UNM remains undefeated against non-ranked opponents and collected its fourth shutout of the year. The Sun Devils dropped to 4-4 overall with the loss. Ball's goal came in the 25th minute on a cross from junior Krista Peterson. Peterson found Ball on the right side and fired the shot to the far post. Ball leads the team with three goals this season. Ball led UNM with four shots.
Nose For The Goal: Freshman Alexis Ball is starting to find her nose for the goal lately after scoring three goals in as many games. Ball recorded her second game-winner of the year Tuesday after scoring a sweet goal against the Sun Devils. The highly touted freshman from La Cueva High School in Albuquerque has a team-leading three goals.
Dangerous Offensive: The Lobos have received goals from nine different players this season. UNM has made the most of its scoring opportunities this season scoring 14 goals. Freshman Alexis Ball leads the team with three, while three other players have at least two goals. Juniors Hannah Hand and Samantha Bevis along with senior Terryn Granados all have two goals.
UTEP Border Shootout: UNM went 1-0-1 last weekend at the 8th Annual UTEP Border Shootout. The Lobos downed North Dakota State in overtime Friday, 2-1, and tied UTEP Sunday, 2-2. UNM scored four goals during the tournament including two by freshman Alexis Ball. Ball had the game-winning header against the Bison and scored Sunday against the Miners. Junior goalkeeper Shannon Adragna played every minute collecting four saves.
UNM Concludes Non-Conference Schedule: UNM concludes its non-conference schedule this week against Arizona State and at Northern Arizona Sunday at 1 p.m. MT. The Lobos are undefeated (5-0-1) against non-ranked opponents this year and have a 1-1-1 record on the road. UNM has however played three nationally-ranked opponents in Oklahoma State, Arizona and Colorado.
Tracking the Lumberjacks: Northern Arizona is 4-1-3 overall this season and 3-1-2 at home. The Lumberjacks have scored 11 goals but have only allowed one goal as of Monday, Sept. 24. Last weekend, NAU went 1-0-1 with a victory over Utah Valley State (2-0) and played Southern Utah to a scoreless draw. Senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Winkelblech ranks among the best in the nation. Winkleblech was recently named the Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the third time in a month. Winkleblech ranks second in the country in goals against average (.113) and in saves percentage (.971).
Series Information: The Lobos a familiar foe this week in Northern Arizona. UNM leads the all-time series with Northern Arizona, 5-1 and have won the last two meetings. UNM is 2-1 when playing in Flagstaff including winning the last meeting 1-0 on Oct. 3, 2004.
