COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico senior Dionne Marsh and Utah senior Leilani Mitchell have been named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Co-Players of the Week.
Marsh averaged 26.5 points and 7.5 rebounds on the week to become the Lobos' all-time leading scorer with 1,852 points. Against UNLV, the Flower Mound, Texas, native, scored a season-high 27 points on .563 shooting (9-for-16). She added nine rebounds, two assists and two steals to lead the Lobos to a close victory over the Rebels, 68-65. The three-time all-MWC honoree broke the New Mexico all-time scoring record by tallying 26 points in a win against Colorado State. She shot .533 from the field (8-for-15) in the 76-45 victory, while also contributing six rebounds, one assist, two blocks and two steals. For the week, Marsh shot 54.8 percent from the field (17-for-31) and 79.2 percent from the line (19-for-24) to help the Lobos secure the fourth seed in the 2008 MWC Tournament.
Mitchell, hailing from Kennewick, Wash., led the Utes to the program's second-ever undefeated conference season (16-0) last week. Against Colorado State and UNLV, Mitchell averaged a team-best 18.5 points, 8.0 assists and 8.0 rebounds. She dished out 16 assists, compared to just two turnovers. Against the Rams, the guard scored 23 points on 7-of-17 shooting (.412), and was 3-for-6 from three-point range. She also had seven rebounds and two steals. Mitchell was one rebound shy of a triple-double against UNLV, scoring 14 points, distributing 13 assists and pulling down nine boards. She shot 5-for-10 from the field (.500), and 3-for-6 from the three-point range, while committing no turnovers.
Heading into the MWC Championships, Marsh owns the second-best scoring averaging in the league at 17.6 points per game, and is tied for tenth in rebounds (6.1). Mitchell ranks fourth in scoring average with 16.4 point and leads the league in assists, averaging 7.75 per game. This marks Marsh's third player of the week honor on the season and Mitchell's sixth.
