Lobo Head Coach Don Flanagan
On the Lobos' defensive effort
I was disappointed in the second half, we didn't block out. We'd let them rebound and then we'd foul. We just have to get a lot better on defense and play more determined. It takes a while to get the defensive habits, and I guess I have spent too much time on offense. We've been scoring a lot of points, but we're also giving up too many points. There's a fine line. I have to make sure I balance it better in practice, to get them a little bit better on defense. I wasn't happy with the defensive effort, and it's frustrating to not see people blocking out and then have a smaller team out rebound us. We fouled them a lot the second half, and we're just giving them opportunities by fouling them.
Observations on specific players
I thought Lauren Taylor played a good game once again. I'm pretty happy with what's happening with her, because I think she's completing her game. She's not just a shooter - she's passing well and being a leader out there so I like what she's given us. Amy [Beggin] played pretty well, I thought Val [Kast] had some good first half minutes and I thought Jess [Kielpinski] battled the whole time she was in there. Our offensive rebounding really needs to improve, and our transition defense needs to improve too. I got everybody in and we won by 18 points, so I'm happy.
Northern Colorado Head Coach Jamie White
On Northern Colorado's first WNIT game
I felt pretty good, especially about the second half and our rebounding in the second half. We were a little disappointed in the first half, as we only had four offensive rebounds. I thought we came out a little bit harder inside in the second half. I only have our exhibitions to only compare it to, but we did better. I think we shot 80-percent from the free throw line and that's big for us. Whitley Cox did a nice job tonight. Jayne Strand, who's a new kid for us, came in and played really well. We were a little outmatched as far as height and that was tough to make some passes and get some open looks at the basket. Not excited about our three point shooting. But I think we'll be ok. It was a good start to the WNIT and hopefully we can improve from here.
On playing in The Pit
I think we were really excited to play here. It's a great venue and Don [Flanagan] does a great job with the Lobos and we really have a lot of respect for them. I feel like our kids really stepped up and played hard. These were circumstances under which we've not played in awhile, with the fans and everything. So I thought they did a good job that way. And we're excited, we never been in a WNIT of any kind so we're excited to head out to Little Rock.
