COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - The University of New Mexico men's tennis team opened Mountain West Conference with a 6-1 victory over Air Force, extending their win streak to six matches and improving to 14-2 on the season. The Falcons drop to 7-12.
The Lobos swept all three matches to capture the doubles point. At the No. 1 position, Johnny Parkes and Miles Bugby picked up a 8-4 win over Austin Francis and Cody Hall. Senior Graeme Kassautzki and sophomore Joe Wood notched their tenth victory this season, winning 8-3, over Taylor Soster and James Tomlin. Freshmen Elliot Chang and Ben Dunbar downed Johnny Buckingham and Will Brown, 8-2, to improve to 8-3.
In singles action, the Lobos won five of the six matches. Parkes picked up another two-set win in the No. 1 slot, this time over Francis, 6-0, 7-6 (7-1). After dropping the first match 4-6, Miles Bugby rallied to win the final two sets over Soster, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 3 position. Lobo freshmen Dunbar, Phil Anderson and Carl Ho all won in two sets.
Dunbar defeated Buckingham 6-1, 6-0, evening his singles record to 6-6. Anderson, a left-hander, continued to dominate, improving to 11-2 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Brown. Ho, who sees limited singles action, went 6-4, 6-2, over Beaussart.
The Lobos play No. 65 UNLV on Sunday, March 29, at 11 a.m. Their match against San Diego State slated for Saturday has been cancelled due to travel difficulties for the Aztecs to Colorado.
