36th-ranked Lobos Pick up 6-1 Win Over Wichita State

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.--- The 36th-ranked University of New Mexico men's tennis team picked up their 10th win of the season with a 6-1 victory over Wichita State at the Randy Briggs Indoor Tennis Bubble. UNM is 10-2 on the season.

The Lobos came out strong, sweeping three matches to capture the doubles point. Senior Graeme Kassautzki and sophomore Joe Wood broke a 1-1 deadlock by capturing three consecutive points at the No. 2 position. Wichita State's Jonathan Obrist and Michal Zawadzki countered with a point to make it 4-2, but the Lobo duo scored four consecutive points to win the first doubles match for the Lobos, 8-4. Seniors Johnny Parkes and Miles Bugby, who are ranked 71st in the nation, improved to 8-2 with an 8-2 victory over Adrian Chermaci and Vladamir Marinescu. Freshmen Elliot Chang and Ben Dunbar completed the sweep with an 8-4 win over David Cavalcanti and Matt Teivans. The freshmen were down 3-2, but roared back for four consecutive points en route to victory.

In singles action, Chang improved to 6-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Zawadzki at the No. 4 position to give the Lobos their first single win of the night. Bugby dominated Obrist with a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 3 slot, while Parkes downed Marinescu 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 1 position. The 103rd-ranked Parkes is 11-1 in singles on the spring, winning five consecutive matches.

Phil Anderson and Graeme Kassautzki were also victorious in singles. The only Lobo loss came via a default after Dunbar became sick into the second set of his singles match. Dunbar was up 7-6 (7-4), 3-2.

UNM continues action at home with a matinee match on Sunday, March 15, at 12 p.m. against Rio Grande rival New Mexico State.
