STAMFORD, Conn. - University of New Mexico junior Jamie Fishencord was announced as a second team selection to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI Women's Track & Field/Cross Country team today. Fishencord, a two-time Academic All-Mountain West Conference honoree and all-conference performer in the hammer throw, was named to the Academic All-District team for the first time in her career after posting a 3.32 GPA in International Management.
The Littleton, Colo. native enjoyed her finest collegiate season in 2005, leading the team and ranking sixth in the Midwest Region with a school-record mark of 192-06 in the hammer. She placed third at the MWC Outdoor Championships to earn all-conference honors for the first time and finished the year ranked No. 9 in the discus with a career-best mark of 152-10. Fishencord will be one of the top contenders for the Mountain West hammer crown and will vie for a spot in the NCAA Championship field in 2006.
The District VI team is comprised of athletes from Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, which are selected in a vote by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Fishencord is the first UNM woman selected to the team since Keren Sari-Bentzur in 2003.
