TEMPE, Ariz. --- The University of New Mexico volleyball team keeps finding ways to win as it beat Iowa State, 32-30, 30-28, 30-22, in the Hilton Phoenix/East Mesa Challenge. The Lobos improve to 5-0 on the season, the squad's best season start since 1990.
The teams battled in Game One with neither team able to put a scoring streak together or build a lead greater than two. All-America candidate Jeanne Fairchild put down three kills in a row for the Lobos to win, 32-30, only UNM's second two-point lead in the game.
In Game Two, the Lobos gradually built a 10-point lead, 19-9. But Iowa State fought back, evening the score to 24-24. The teams battled the remainder of the game with Lobo middle blocker Kerri Beck came up with three kills, including the game-winner, to secure a 2-0 match-lead for UNM.
"We did well in streaks, then would let up," said New Mexico head coach Jeff Nelson. "I thought we played a bit casual at times. Our middle blockers and right-sides played well."
The Lobos were sluggish to start Game Three as they allowed Iowa State to build a 6-0 lead. Fairchild came up with two key kills to get UNM back on track. The Cyclones continued to keep UNM at arms-length until kills by Beck and Fairchild, a block by Beck and Rose Morris, and a service ace by Sarah Kwasigroch evened the score at 14.
The teams continued to swap leads until the Lobos took the lead for good at 22-21 on a kill by Fairchild. The Lobos sealed the match win with a service ace by Kwasigroch and a block by Beck and Morris.
"Jeanne Fairchild really came back in Game Three after struggling in Game Two," said Nelson. "Our serving and passing did well again, probably the biggest difference-maker in the match."
The Lobos (5-0) will play host Arizona State (1-3) at approximately 8 p.m. (MDT).
