Lobos in Second Place Halfway Through the NCAA West Regionals

The University of New Mexico ski team got off to a great start today at the NCAA West Regionals at Montana State University. The Lobos captured two individual titles and are in second place overall. New Mexico finished the day with 259.5 total points, trailing only Denver who scored 293 points. Alaska-Anchorage is in third place with 245.5 points, followed by Colorado in fourth place with 226.5 points.

The men's Alpine team got things going by winning the giant slalom event. Their 78 points edged Denver's 74 points in the event. It was the Lobos' second giant slalom win of the season and their first since the season-opening win at Utah. Sophomore Peter Roering got his first win of the season with a two-run time of 1:27.71. Sophomore Lars Loeseth scored his fourth top-10 of the season in the men's GS with a fifth place finish. Fellow sophomore Alex Mach recorded his second top-10 of the year with a ninth place showing. Senior Alex Freberg also raced for the Lobos, finishing 25th.

Senior Martina Stursova continued her strong season with her fourth win of the year in the women's 5K Classic. Junior Trine Lundamo also recorded a top-5 finish, placing fourth in the event. Freshman Tiffany Callahan had a strong showing with her 13th place finish, her second highest finish in a Classic race of the year.. Seniors Pirkko Pulkkanen and Andrea Roberts also raced for UNM, placing 19th and 34th, respectively.

Sophomore Dirk Grimm led the men's Nordic team with a ninth place finish in the 10K Classic. It was his third top-10 showing in the Classic event. Freshman Inge Kristofferson and junior Geir-Endre Rogn rounded out the Lobo scoring with 14th and 15th place finishes, respectively. Sophomore Jedd Young also raced for UNM today and placed 28th in the event.

The women's Alpine team finished fifth in their giant slalom race. Freshman Lene Kaasa led the Lobos with a 12th place finish. Junior Kathrin Spendier placed 15th while senior Helena Woodrow finished 18th. Junior Gladys Weidt also skied for UNM today, placing 31st.

Action at the 2005 West Regionals concludes tomorrowwith the Alpine slalom races. The Nordic teams will also complete in men's 20K and women's 15K freestyle events.
