LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 65 Texas Tech men's tennis team slipped past the 68th-ranked Lobos, 4-3 today. Junior David Kowalski was the only Lobo to win both his singles and doubles matches.
The Red Raiders claimed the doubles point, despite losing at the No. 1 spot. Junior Ryan Stotland and Kowalski battled for the 9-8 win over Jakob Paulsen and Bojan Szumanski. Senior Divan Coetzee and freshman Hiroud Akhavan, playing in the second position, fought to the end against Rodney Vickers and Michael Innerebner but lost 9-8. Tech's Teddy DiBlasi and Esat Tanik downed senior Jasmin Hodzic and sophomore Henry Gers at No. 3, 8-4.
In singles, Paulsen pulled off the huge upset, beating 22nd-ranked Divan Coetzee 7-6, 4-6, 7-6.
Getting singles wins for New Mexico, Kowalski won at No. 2, 6-3, 6-3 over Szumanski. Gers and Hodzic came from behind for wins at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Gers downed Dimitrio Martinez 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 while Hodzic netted the 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Vickers.
Texas Tech's final two singles points came from Tanik and Innerebner in the third and fourth spots. Tanik defeated Stotland, 6-0, 6-3 and Innerebner beat Akhavan 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.
The Lobos return home Saturday, March 27th at noon to face Denver.
