SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- New Mexico softball possibly had its best pitching performance of the season Sunday as freshman Danielle Castro and senior Analise Rubalcava helped lead the Lobos past San Diego State, 3-1. Castro got the win after throwing six innings against the Aztecs allowing a run on three hits. Rubalcava came on in relief to slam the door on SDSU in the final inning and pick up the save. Rubalcava also led New Mexico at the plate going 2-for-3 with a run.
Castro was dominate Sunday and had a one-hit shutout going into the seventh inning. Castro (3-11) only stuck out one of the 23 batters faced during the game but stellar defense by UNM kept the Aztecs in check.
New Mexico (11-27, 2-4 MWC) scored twice in the first inning and that proved to be all they needed. The Lobos took advantage of a throwing miscue by SDSU and sprinkled in two hits to open the game.
The Lobos added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI sacrifice bunt by freshman Jessica Garcia. Garcia was 1-for-2 in the game with an RBI.
New Mexico had three hits in the game and won their second MWC game of the year. The Lobos handed the Aztecs their first MWC loss.
SDSU (27-14, 4-1 MWC) tried to mount a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning but Rubalcava secured the win for New Mexico. The Aztecs scored their only run in the inning on two hits. With two runners on and no outs, Rubalcava took over and quickly got three outs. It was the second save of the year for Rubalcava.
Samantha Beasley took the loss for SDSU and fell to 13-10 on the year.
The Lobos will travel to Fort Collins, Colo., next weekend to face Colorado State for two games. The games will be available on gametracker via www.GoLobos.com.
