Lobo Volleyball Signs Three To National Letters Of Intent

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - New Mexico head volleyball coach Kelley Sliva McKee has announced that three players have signed National Letters of Intent to attend UNM next fall and play for the 2004 Lobo volleyball team.

The signees include Kim Smith-Cox (Flagstaff, Ariz./Coconino High School), Samie Weber (Fort Lupton, Colo./Fort Lupton High School) and Emily Zastrow (Glendale, Ariz./Deer Valley High School).

"This class is very athletic and is a group of highly competitive young women," said UNM head coach Kelley Sliva McKee. "By adding them to our current core of returning players, we become better and better and continue the process of building this program. We are very excited about what Kim, Samie and Emily will bring to Lobo volleyball and believe that each of them will help us take the next step in the Mountain West Conference."

Below is a profile on each of the players:

Kim Smith-Cox * Defensive Specialist * 5-8 * Flagstaff, Ariz. (Coconino High School)

Smith-Cox lettered in volleyball all four years of high school...first-team all-state in 2002 and honorable mention all-state in 2001...named to Grand Canyon Region first-team in 2001 and 2003, second team in 2002...first-team all-city in 2001 and 2002...earned Merchant All-Tournament Team honors in 2001, 2002 and 2003...named MVP of the Merchant Tournament in 2003...led her team to back-to-back 4A Arizona State Titles in 2001 and 2002...her team finished in the top four in 2003.

Personal: Smith-Cox is the daughter of Jeff and Cindy Cox...Coconino High School Academic Honor Roll and Athlete Scholar all four years...looking to major in Physical Therapy or Sports Medicine.

Sliva McKee on Cox-Smith: "Kim is a very good athlete that passes and digs well to go along with very strong jump serve. She will bring a lot to our practice as she can also hit on the outside and will bring an outstanding work ethic to our program. Kim will help stabilize us on the back row and will make players around her better with her will to win."

Samie Weber * Middle Hitter * 6-0 * Fort Lupton, Colo. (Fort Lupton High School)

Weber lettered three years in volleyball and two years in golf at Fort Lupton High...first-team all-conference and honorable mention all-state in volleyball...second runner-up in Junior Miss Pagent.

Personal: Weber is the daughter of Terry and Priscilla Weber...looking to major in Engineering.

Sliva McKee on Weber: "Samie brings size and athleticism to the Lobos. The fact that Samie can play middle or on the outside makes her a very versatile player in our systems. She has high standards on and off the court and will come in and compete immediately for playing time."

Emily Zastrow * Setter * 6-0 * Glendale, Ariz. (Deer Valley High School)

Zastrow lettered in volleyball all four years in high school...earned all-tournament honors in multiple high school tournaments...first-team All-Region Class 5A in 2002 and 2003...honorable mention All-State Class 5A in 2002...holds Deer Valley School Record for setting percentage as well as serve receive percentage...led team to three Class 5A Arizona Region titles...also led team to three Top 15 finishes in Arizona State Tournament...in 2001, she played on the Deer Valley team nationally ranked in the top 50.

Personal: Zastow is the daughter of Randy and Monica Zastrow...looking to major in Art...maintains a 3.0 GPA.

Sliva McKee on Zastrow: "Emily brings size at the net and is very versatile with a strong competitive nature. She has the physical ability to come in and impact our team. She can set and hit and brings us a big block on the right side and can help against the opponents' middle hitters. She will be the future for the Lobos in the setting position. Emily must come in and become a student of the game and learn how to run a team at the Division I level."
