ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico completed a three-game sweep of Oklahoma State Sunday with a 7-4 victory at Lobo Field. Freshman Gabriella Parra led UNM with three hits and was one of three Lobos to have multiple hits in the contest. New Mexico plated seven runs on 11 hits and extends its winning streak to five games. The Lobos are 9-5 on the season, while the Cowgirls fell to 10-9.
Oklahoma State scored first in the opening inning after leading off the game with a walk. Mariah Gearhart received the walk and later scored on an RBI double by Alysia Hamilton.
The Lobos responded with four runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Sophomore Sara Loeffelholz opened the game with a single up the middle and was followed by a Tianna George double down the left field line. Senior Lindsey Elcess walked to load the bases for Parra. Parra delivered with an RBI single to center field scoring Loeffelholz. Katie Gilmore continued the rally with a double down the right field line scoring George and Elcess. The final run in the inning came on a bases loaded walk by Samantha Hughes. After the final out of the inning, UNM had a 4-1 lead.
The game would stay that way until the fourth inning. OSU plated a run after receiving another leadoff walk. The Cowgirls scored four runs in the game and all came off leadoff walks. Heading into the bottom of the fourth, UNM led 4-2.
New Mexico quickly added two more runs to make it 6-2 Lobos in the bottom of the fourth. Parra was credited with two RBI after hitting a double down the left field line. Parra was 3-for-4 in the game with three RBI. George and Elcess both had hits in the inning.
OSU would score one in the fifth and another in the seventh but could not overcome the early deficit. UNM piled on an insurance run in the home half of the fifth inning and sealed the 7-4 victory.
The Cowgirls had won 15 of the last 16 meetings heading into the series but UNM changed that with the three-game sweep. The Lobos are now 5-0 against teams from the Big 12 this season and have won their last five games.
Sophomore Tori Rogers started the game for New Mexico but only pitched the first inning. Rogers gave up a run on two hits after facing seven batters. Freshman Madelyn Machac came on in relief and pitched the final six innings. Machac was credited with the win and secured her first collegiate victory. Machac had three strikeouts and allowed three runs on five hits.
OSU starter Amanda Crabtree took the loss and fell to 5-6 this season. The Cowgirls threw three pitchers in the game after Sarah Odom and Anna Whiddon came on in relief.
The Lobos are scheduled to travel to Texas Tech on Wednesday for a doubleheader in Lubbock, Texas. The doubleheader is slated to start at 3 p.m. MT.
