ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The No. 21 University of New Mexico women's basketball team will play host to the No. 10 University of Minnesota Wednesday night, in a non-conference match-up. The Lobos enter the contest 5-1, while the Golden Gophers bring a perfect 4-0 record to The Pit. Tip-off for the battle between top-25 teams is set for 7:00 p.m. at The Pit.
TONIGHT'S GAME: Tonight's game features the No. 25/21 Lobos of the University of New Mexico against the No. 12/10 Golden Gophers of the University of Minnesota in a non-conference match-up.
SCOUTING THE LOBOS: UNM is 5-1 on the season with a 69-52 victory over Oral Roberts in the first round of the preseason WNIT, a 55-46 win over Cal in the second round, a 74-63 loss to No. 22 Oklahoma in the WNIT semifinals, a 76-68 win at No. 12 Texas, a 61-54 win over Marist and a 56-52 win over Oklahoma State. New Mexico is led in scoring by sophomore Dionne Marsh at 16.5 ppg. Senior Abbie Letz leads the team in rebounding at 7.4 rpg., while junior Katie Montgomery leads UNM in assists at 4.3 apg.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GOPHERS: Minnesota is 4-0 on the season with wins over San Francisco (80-62) and Stanford (84-77) at home and victories over Nevada (83-75) and Virginia (69-64) at the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. The Golden Gophers are led in scoring and rebounding by Natasha Williams at 16.3 ppg. and 6.5 rpg. Leading Minnesota in assists is April Calhoun at 4.3 apg.
THE COACHES: UNM is led by head coach Don Flanagan who in his 11th season at New Mexico. Flanagan is 222-94 at UNM. Minnesota is under the direction of head coach Pam Borton who begins her fourth season at Minnesota and eighth overall. Borton is 80-23 at the helm of the Golden Gophers and 149-69 overall.
