Lobos Men's Tennis Open Fall Season at NMSU Fall Invitational

LAS CRUCES, N.M. --- The Lobo men's tennis team began their first tournament of the fall season this Friday as they participated in the NMSU Fall Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M. UNM is one of five teams brought in to compete in this tournament along with Abilene Christian, Arizona, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona and Western New Mexico.

Four Lobos competed in both singles and doubles. In singles, three out of the four lobos advanced to the second round. Out of those three, two are advancing to the next round on Saturday.

Mads Hegelund coming into the tournament with determination won his first match against Patrick Pfister of New Mexico State 6-3, 6-4. He later faced Patrick Schimmelbauer of Northern Arizona and won a fairly close match 6-2, 7-5.

Samir Iftikhar having a difficult first match managed to pull out a win in three sets against Nick Plum of Abilene Christian 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. He later faced another close match but still was able to win in three sets against Alfredo Desiati of Abilene Christian 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

James Hignett was able to win his first match with a positive attitude after losing the first set by three games. He played against Jean Benoit-Belin of Western New Mexico 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. The win was short-lived however, after losing in an intense match to Jermaine Degardin of New Mexico State 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Mitch McDaniels was not able to finish with a win in a three set match against Dominic Bermudez of Northern Arizona 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. He was able to put a win under his belt after playing against Alvaro Nunez of Western New Mexico 6-3, 3-0 ret.

Only one out of the two doubles teams won both of their matches today.

Mitch McDaniels teamed with Mads Hegelund defeated Abilene Christian's Plum/McCarty with a dominating score of 8-2. They had a difficult time being able to control the scoreboard as they did the match before, but still won against New Mexico State's Degardin/Westgate 9-7.

James Hignett teamed with Samir Iftikhar was able to pull close to Arizona State's Bermudez/Chou but lost 8-6. They managed to have the same score but this time was able to claim the win against Western New Mexico's Benoit-Belin/Almeida 8-6.     

Play will continue Saturday at 10 a.m. and conclude Sunday with the championship matches at 9 a.m.
