Lobo baseball head coach Ray Birmingham will be recognized as the 2007-08 Coach of the Year by the University of New Mexico's Alumni Lettermen's Association this Friday, Sept. 12, as part of the annual Hall of Honor induction ceremony.

"I am very humbled," Birmingham said of the honor. "I am sitting among a bunch of great coaches so when they told me I asked `Are you sure?'"

Birmingham led the Lobos to a 34-25 record and 16-8 (2nd) in the Mountain West. With Birmingham at the helm, UNM began the season 7-0, the best start since 1973, and appeared in the MWC tournament championship game for the first time in league history.

UNM also had eight players named to the All-Mountain West Conference teams, including the entire infield on the second team.

"The kids did it," Birmingham said of last season's success. "I didn't do it. I haven't won a game yet."

The annual banquet and dinner will be held at the UNM Student Union Ballroom. Tickets are $45 each or $450 for a table of 10. Call the UNM Alumni Office at 277-2593 for more information.
