ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico travels to Fort Collins, Colo., this weekend to battle Colorado State in the 2007 Mountain West Conference opener. The Lobos play a two-game set with the Rams starting Saturday at 1 p.m. and concluding Sunday at noon. UNM is 10-13 this season and carries the momentum of a three-game winning streak into Colorado.
The Lobos are led by junior Lindsey Elcess at the plate and junior Kelly Ninemire in the circle. Elcess, who was named the MWC Hitter of the Week Tuesday, is hitting .349 in 63 at-bats. Ninemire is 5-7 in 18 appearances and has a team-leading 3.70 ERA. Ninemire is holding opponents to a .253 batting average and has 51 strikeouts.
The Rams are 21-18 and recently were swept by Nebraska in a doubleheader on March 28. Allison Majam and Lauren Cusick lead CSU at the plate, while the Rams rely on four pitchers. Jessi Strickland has been one of the most valuable players for CSU after hitting .304 with a team-leading 26 RBI and has a 6-6 record in the circle. Strickland has made 19 appearances and has a 3.25 ERA.
The Lobos lead the all-time series with the Rams, 40-39, but have gone 3-18 over the last five years. Last season, UNM went 1-3 against CSU with the only victory coming on May 6 in Fort Collins, Colo., 3-2. UNM is 1-6 in Mountain West Conference openers dating back to the 2000 season. UNM has battled Colorado State twice in conference openers and is 1-1. The Lobos swept the Rams in a doubleheader in 2000 but have lost every opener since.
