SABINO SPRINGS, ARIZ. - The University of New Mexico men's golf team shot an opening round 275 (-9) to sit in second place at the PING Arizona Intercollegiate. The Lobos are eight strokes behind the host team Arizona.
Individually New Mexico was led by Jay Choi who shot a career-best 66 on the par 71 Arizona National Country Club to sit in fourth place. Jay Reynolds finished round one tied for 13th at 2-under, while transfer Spencer Levin and Madalitso Muthiya are tied for 19th at 1-under par. Other New Mexico results: Ian Medlock and Tyler Symons playing as an individual are tied for 28th at even and Charlie Beljan also playing as an individual is tied for 40th at 1-over par.
The individual lead belongs to Chris Nallen of Arizona at 13-under par, while Peter Tomasulo of Cal and Vince Poncino of UC Irvine are tied for second at 6-under par.
The PING Arizona Intercollegiate will continue tomorrow at 8 AM, with the finish of the second round followed by the third and final round of play. Partial second round results can be seen at golfstat.com.
