ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The awards keep coming in for University of New Mexico seniors Mike Brownstein and Brian Cavazos-Galvez. A day after both learned they had been selected in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft, the all- Mountain West Conference first teamers were named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) all-Midwest Region First Team today by the 36 regional coaches. Regional first team honorees advance to the all-America ballot.
Brownstein, the 2009 Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, was selected in the 14th round by the Milwaukee Brewers. The Lobos' starting second baseman and leadoff hitter for the past two seasons, Brownstein has been named to two all-America second teams - Louisville Slugger and Ping!Baseball. The Tucson, Ariz., native moved into the UNM record book in 2009 with 101 hits and 11 triples on the season. Brownstein was one of four Lobos to finish the season hitting over .400 at a .414. He was named MWC Player of the Week on March 16 and was an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District second team honoree.
Cavazos-Galvez, a two-time all-MWC First Team outfielder, was selected in the 12th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Albuquerque native also ended up his two-year career in a Lobo uniform in the UNM record book. Cavazos-Galvez ended up fourth on the UNM career slugging percentage list at .686. UNM's starting right fielder for two seasons, he was named MWC Player of the Week, Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week and collegebaseballinsider.com National Player of the Week on May 18.
