LAS CRUCES, N.M. --- New Mexico defeated New Mexico State, 7-6, in the Route 66 Casino Hotel Rio Grande Rivalry played Tuesday at the NMSU Softball Complex. The Lobos rallied late to pull out the victory over the Aggies. UNM was led by sophomore Sara Loeffelholz who went 2-for-3 with two RBI. The Lobos improved to 18-14 with the win, while NMSU dropped to 17-27.
The Aggies scored two runs in the second and third innings and jumped ahead 4-0. NMSU plated a run on a sacrifice fly and a bunt single in the second and got a two-run homer from Stacey Lien in the third.
The Lobos took their first lead in the sixth inning after scoring four runs. UNM added four hits including back-to-back two-RBI singles by Loeffelholz and freshman Machac Machac. After the top of the sixth inning, the Lobos led 7-4.
NMSU scored its final runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth and seventh on solo home runs. Hoku Nohara crushed a solo shot deep over the left field fence in the sixth and Ashley Maroda homered to left. The Aggies cut the UNM lead to 7-6 but was unable to overcome the late rally by the Lobos.
Machac was credited with the win and improved to 3-2. Machac came on in relief during the third inning and pitched until the bottom of the seventh. Senior Kelly Ninemire, who started the game, came back in and received the save after pitching the final three outs.
Kim Watson took the loss for NMSU and fell to 13-14.
The Lobos host Colorado State this weekend at Lobo Field. UNM and CSU play Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Gametracker and live video will be available for both games.
