ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - New Mexico softball was defeated by Utah, 8-0, Saturday in the series finale at Lobo Field. The Utes scored eight runs on 11 hits and held on to complete the run-rule in six innings. UNM junior Ashley Allen was 1-for-1 in the game with a walk. UNM falls to 19-22 overall and 8-8 in the Mountain West Conference. Utah improves to 24-23-1 and 4-11 in league play.
The Utes opened the game with five singles and managed to push across four runs in the first inning. Utah sent 10 batters to the plate in the opening frame. Utes catcher Andrea Hoffman had a two RBI single to left field to highlight the inning.
Utah added a run in the second and fourth innings before tacking on two more in the sixth to reach the run-rule limit. Only five of the eight runs scored by the Utes were earned after UNM committed two fielding errors.
The Lobos threatened in the third and fourth innings but Utah managed to get two timely double plays to end the rallies.
Utah sophomore Staci Hemingway was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Hemingway had a double in the second inning to plate a run. Hoffman was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Kristie Keller was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
UNM sent three pitchers to the circle in the game with starter Caley Peterson taking the loss. Peterson goes to 1-7 overall after giving up four runs on five hits and only facing six batters.
Karina Cannon started for Utah and went three innings allowing three hits and walking four. Meghan Dyer came on in relief to get the win after throwing three innings of hitless ball. Dyer moves to 16-13 overall with the win.
The Lobos return to action Friday against Colorado State in a doubleheader at 5 p.m. The games will be played at Lobo Field and will be available via gametracker and all access at www.GoLobos.com.
