The Lobo volleyball team will have a different player blog each day during our trip to Argentina. Check back each day to see what we are doing. Pictures will become available as we get stronger internet access.
May 31 - Sophomore setter Jade Michaelsen
We started Saturday at 0:00 (O hundred hours/ military time) on a double decker sleeper bus that drove us 9 and a half hours to Cordoba. We arrived at the King David Flat Hotel around 9:30 in the morning. The area around the hotel was quite unique with tall buildings and many places to eat. Well I shouldn't say many; there were a lot of cafes and pizzerias.
We had the day off so many chose to do different things with their time: sleep, shop, eat, etc... There was a huge shopping `mall' about three blocks from the hotel that many people enjoyed. There were many souvenirs to buy for family and friends.
We left our hotel around 7 p.m. to head to our match vs. the Cordoba All-Stars. The 20-minute drive to the gym consisted of laughter and conversation about our double decker bus making it through the small streets and the branches scraping the top and sides of the bus basically the entire time. We now have an on going joke that Tom Cruise is fighting on the top of our bus making all the noise.
When we got to the gym, like always, people were staring at the large group in cherry. Inside the gym there was a men's volleyball game that was about to start so we sat . watched before our match. The game was fun but there was clearly a better team that won by a landslide. Once their game finished we started warming up A LOT because it was freezing in the gym. By the time the game started we had done many jumping jacks and played a couple of fun games to get our muscles warm.
The game started at 9 p.m. and there was a large crowd in the gym for both their team and ours. Game One was consistent and fun. This was a great way to start the match. We won 25-17 and gained a lot of momentum going into Game Two. The next game started well and also ended in a win, 25-18. We let the third game slip away from us, 25-20, but recovered nicely in the fourth with a win, 25-16.
We thanked the team after the match and were then bombarded by a ton of teenage girls and boys that wanted to ask many questions... and touch Kelsi's very blonde hair. Many of them were fascinated by most of the girls on our team with blonde hair because they aren't used to seeing it. I understand some Spanish when it is spoken to me so I was able to communicate with most of them, and they were attempting to practice their English on us. They were all VERY friendly and enjoyed watching our match and being able to talk to us.
By the time all the socializing was over it was around 11:30 p.m. and we still had not eaten anything since 5. Our next stop was the MM sports grill in Cordoba. The instant we sat down, we were looking for the baskets of bread that never fail to be brought to us. The meal was great and was topped off with a nice dessert. We were all ready to get back to the hotel to get some much needed rest.
When we arrived back at King David Hotel it was 2 a.m. There was a quincenera (like a Sweet Sixteen party) going on in one of the conference rooms and some of the girls went in and got their groove on until the mom of the party kicked them out. She later invited them back in because the birthday girl enjoyed having them there, but by that time, our girls had their minds set on their beds back in their rooms.
Breakfast is set for 7 a.m.-10:30 a.m. but was not mandatory because our coach knew the odds that we would be up before then were very slim ... smart man. That concludes our long Saturday and two hours into Sunday. Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!
We'll see you tomorrow!
