Albuquerque, N.M.- Freshman Amy Shipperd battled today in New Mexico's match against Nevada. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as the University of New Mexico women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to the Wolf Pack at the Linda Estes Tennis Center. The Lobos (1-5) will be back in action on Sunday to take on Kansas State at 11 A.M. at the Linda Estes Tennis Center.
Shipperd fought hard against Nevada's Sophie Stevens. Shipperd lost the first set, 6-2 but came back to dominate the second set, 6-1. The Melbourne, Australia product was down 4-0 in the third set before cutting Stevens' lead to 4-2. Shipperd won the next two games to make the score 5-4 Nevada. Unfortunately, Shipperd dropped the next game losing 6-4.
Junior Ashley Bonner, who plays No. 2 singles, was out today due to a back injury. Taking her place in the lineup at No. 6 was Eliane Bourdages. Bourdages made her 2010 debut against Aline Laurioux, dropping the match, 6-1, 6-3.
"We are still not competing as well as we are practicing," head coach Roy Cañada said. "We need to close that gap. I am proud of the way we fought. However, we need to close that gap between practice and competition."
