Brownstein Picks Up All-America Honor; All-Star Break Update

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- University of New Mexico second baseman Mike Brownstein was recently named to the Jewish Sports Review' College Baseball All-American Team (Division I) First Team. Brownstein was one of two Lobos to start in all 59 games during the 2008 season. The All-Mountain West Conference second team honoree from Tucson, Ariz., finished the season with a .350 batting average and led the team in runs (53), hits (89), triples (4), walks (29), and stolen bases (20).

Brownstein is one of three current and future Lobos playing for the Hays Larks this summer. The Larks are currently 22-11 and lead the Jayhawk League at 18-8. Brownstein is playing shortstop for the Larks, while Lobo Freshman All-American Rafael Neda is splitting time at catcher and designated hitter. Lobo signee Edwin Carl is pitching for the Larks and has a 1.96 ERA in 23 innings pitched.

All-MWC first teamer Brian Cavazos-Galvez has found a summer home with the Battle Creek Bombers of the Northwoods League. Cavazos-Galvez, an outfielder, got a late start with the team and has played in just nine games, but is hitting .368 with seven runs scored, three doubles, a home run and five RBI. Lobo outfielder/pitcher Bobby Moore is playing for the LodiGrape Sox of the Sierra League in California. Moore has seen time on the mound for the first-year program.

Several former Lobos are keeping their baseball careers alive this summer.

Danny Ray Herrera is currently with the Louisville Bats (Cincinnati - AAA) and made a short trip up to the parent Cincinnati Reds in June - 2.56 ERA, 1-3 with 3 saves.

Matt Young is currently with the Mississippi Braves (Atlanta - AA) in Jackson. Young will play in the Southern League All-Star Game on July 14 at Carolina's Five-County Stadium. In 92 games this season, Young is hitting .282 with 51 runs, 93 hits, 11 doubles, 6 triples, 2 home runs and 33 RBI.

Chris Carlson is currently with the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit - A) and was an Eastern Division All-Star in June. Carlson was hitting .290 before begin placed on the disabled list on June 21.

Jordan Pacheco is currently with the Tri-City Dust Devils (Colorado - A) and is catching. In 20 games this season, he is hitting .210.

Bobby LaFromboise is currently with the Everett AquaSox (Seattle - A) and had the opportunity to throw against Pacheco on July 11. LaFromboise left the game after the third inning with a 2-1 lead and got Pacheco to strike out swinging and fly out to left in his two at-bats against his former teammate.

Scott Gracey is currently pitching for the GCL Blue Jays (Toronto - R). In 5 appearances, Gracey has made three starts and has a 2.13 ERA.

Stephen Smith was recently moved up to the Ogden Raptors (Los Angeles - R) after starting just one game with the GCL Dodgers. Smith has a 3.60 ERA in three appearances with Ogden.

Nate Melek is currently with the Calgary Vipers, an independent team.

• Jamie Vermilyea was released by the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Toronto - AA) on June 27.
